Synopsis

The World Health Organization has lifted the emergency status of the pandemic. With most of the world dropping guard against the virus, it was a symbolic decision. But, as WHO indicated, experts have cautioned that the threat remains. Therefore, the muted phase of the virus should be utilised to build strong guard rails to avoid another virulent outbreak.

May 5 marked a momentous day for the world. Geneva-headquartered World Health Organization (WHO) declared an end to the emergency status of the Covid-19 outbreak. Exactly 1,221 days ago, the United Nations agency had learned of a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, the cause of which was unknown. On January 30, 2020, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had announced it was a public health emergency of international concern,
