Updated Maruti eVX electric SUV shown at Vibrant Gujarat summit

Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch its first electric car in the Indian market. The concept model named as the eVX was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023. Maruti Suzuki has now showcased the updated concept version of the upcoming electric SUV at the 2024 Vibrant Gujarat summit.

The updated eVX concept is a sign that the car is almost production-ready. Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the new car in the Indian market by the end of this year. It also shows how close the production version of the electric car might look to the concept version.

Maruti’s first EV

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki electric car, which is based on the eVX concept, was recently seen being tested on public roads. The car was first spotted earlier this year.

The test model of the electric SUV had regular-looking 17-inch silver alloy wheels, but it is expected that more stylish alloy wheels will be used in the final production version. The squared wheel arches on the car neatly accommodate these alloy wheels. The SUV also has rearview mirrors similar to those found on the Baleno, which include integrated cameras to support the 360-degree camera system in the vehicle.

One interesting feature of this Suzuki electric SUV is that its rear door handles are integrated into the C-pillar, similar to the current Maruti Suzuki Swift. Both the front and rear fenders have a slightly flared design, giving the car a muscular appearance. While the interior of the vehicle was fully camouflaged, preventing a detailed observation, the exterior design elements provide a glimpse of what we can expect.

The production version of the Suzuki eVX model, which is based on a new electric platform, will have a 60kWh battery pack that is expected to provide a range of around 500-520 kilometers. The dimensions of the vehicle are expected to be 4.3 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.6 meters high. When it is launched in the Indian market under the Maruti Suzuki brand, it will compete with other upcoming electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra XUV400, MG ZS EV, and the production version of the Tata Curvv Electric.

During an interview, Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, mentioned that there won’t be any electric cars priced below 10 lakhs rupees initially. He explained that he doesn’t believe there will be a significant market for electric cars in this price range, as most consumers prefer vehicles with longer ranges, even if they are more expensive.

Bhargava also pointed out that many car buyers may not have the necessary conditions for owning an electric car, such as access to a dedicated parking space with a charging unit.

Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce its first electric car in the Indian market by 2025. This electric car will target the mid-size SUV segment. The company has ambitious plans to launch up to six new electric cars by 2031.
