Production-spec Tata Sierra EV leaked with new design

Tata Motors stole the limelight by showcasing the Sierra EV concept at the Auto Expo 2023 and surprised many by saying that its production version would be in the launch cards of Tata Motors. Staying true to that announcement, Tata Motors has filed for a design patent of the production version of the Sierra EV, indicating that the Tata Sierra EV might arrive sooner than expected.

The patent image of the Tata Sierra EV by MotorBeam, which has leaked on the internet, borrows much of the design of the concept model, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. Much like the original model, which first came out in 1991, the modern Sierra EV concept featured curved and large-sized rear windows. However, it had a more conventional five-door design, unlike the three-door design of the first-generation Sierra. The leaked patent image of the Sierra EV also shows a five-door design but with a few more noteworthy changes.

Starting from the front profile, the leaked patent image of the Tata Sierra EV shows a slightly toned-down look, with it getting a wide-stretched, end-to-end daytime running LED strip, which recently debuted on the Nexon EV and updated versions of Harrier and Safari. The Sierra EV will also get headlights within trapezoidal housings on the front bumper corners, along with a muscular bonnet, closed front grille and rugged skid plate.

The leaked patent image also gives a clearer picture of the side profile, where the Tata Sierra EV features flush-type door handles, much like those of the Mahindra XUV700. The trapezoidal wheel arches here seem to have body cladding over them, which stretches down to the bottom of the door panels. Even the window frame has been restyled with a kink in the B-pillar to give it a curved look, giving it a throwback to the large window panels of the original Sierra.

Other design highlights of the Tata Sierra EV, which can be seen in the leaked patent image, include Y-themed alloy wheels, roof rails and an almost vertical D-pillar, much like how they were showcased in the concept form at the Auto Expo 2023. However, the patent image doesn’t reveal the rear profile and interior layout of the Sierra SUV, which are also expected to be toned down for the production version.

It is confirmed that the Tata Sierra will make its grand comeback in an all-electric form only, though the powertrain details and other specifications of the electric SUV are not yet confirmed. The production version of the Tata Sierra EV will hit the showroom floors in 2025, which will compete with the likes of BYD Atto 3 and the upcoming Mahindra XUV.e9 electric SUVs.
