Mahindra Automotive offers its newest SUV, the Scorpio-N, in a number of variants. The company also offers the Scorpio-N with a dedicated 4X4 system called the 4Xplor. In a country like India, where off-roading is slowly gaining more popularity, this 4Xplor system of the SUV is regularly put to use by numerous people. Recently, a video showing how capable the Scorpio-N actually is has been shared online. This video highlights the real-life ground clearance of the Scorpio-N, and it also talks about the approach and departure angles of this popular SUV.
Mahindra Scorpio-N Off-road Test
This video of real-life ground clearance of the Scorpio-N has come courtesy of AB Ventures from YouTube. It starts off with the presenter mentioning that in this video, he will be testing the real-life ground clearance of his Mahindra Scorpio-N with the 4X4 system. He states that so far he has tackled some hard obstacles with his Scorpio-N. However, he now wishes to see the limits that it can go. Following this, he introduces his friend who owns a Maruti Jimny and has come with him to accompany him on the adventure.
After the brief introduction, he mentions that they have come to a sort of a riverbed route which has a number of heavy stones. He adds that he will be trying to tackle this terrain with his Scorpio-N. He also adds that there is a small ditch which he will be trying to cross so that he can find out the approach and departure angles of the Scorpio-N. Next up, he mentions that before venturing into such unknown terrains, people should know the capabilities of their vehicles. And to help better understand it, he measures the height of a rock, which comes out to 320mm. He states that apart from a tractor, no other car can cross it.
Mahindra Scorpio-N Approach and Departure Angles
Following this, he then jumps inside his Mahindra Scorpio-N and starts driving on the rocky route. He then reaches a point where he steps out of the car and explains the approach, break over, and departure angles. He mentions that the Scorpio-N has a glaring design issue. This issue is that the DEF tank is placed right behind the rear wheel well, and because of this, during departure, if the stone crashes with it, all of the DEF fluid will leak, and the car will stop driving.
Next up, he turns around his car and finds a ditch to cross. He mentions that there are two metal poles sticking out which can burst his tires, so he has to be careful. After this, he attempts to cross this ditch and measure the approach and departure angles of the Scorpio-N. However, the car gets stuck and could not overcome it due to the lack of a locking differential and bad approach angle. During this, his front bumper also comes off. Lastly, the same obstacle is tackled by the Jimny, which because of its easy maneuverability, crosses it.
Mahindra Scorpio-N Real-life Ground Clearance
After failing to cross the obstacle, the presenter comes back and starts to show the real-life ground clearance of his SUV. He shows a device made by him where he uses a steel tube on top of a car jack to measure the real ground clearance of the car. He mentions that the real ground clearance of a vehicle is the distance between the road and the lowest point of the car, which in the Scorpio-N’s case is the rear suspension and differential.
Following this, he then starts driving his SUV over his device at a height of 180mm. The Scorpio-N can be seen easily clearing it. Next up, he then shows the car also clearing a 200mm obstacle. Finally, he tests the ground clearance with a 210mm obstacle, and this time the steel rod falls down. He mentions that with bigger tires, he has an advantage of 10mm, so the real-life ground clearance of a stock Scorpio-N is around 200mm.
