Babar Azam Leaves Behind Gayle, Kohli To Become Fastest To 10000 T20 Runs

Even though he’s been stripped of Pakistan’s captaincy, Babar Azam continues to show his value in the shortest format.

With back to back half-centuries in the ongoing PSL 2024 season, Babar Azam, on Wednesday, brought up his 10000th T20 run, and in doing so, became the fastest batsman to do so, in terms of both innings and age, surpassing the likes of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle, two batters who are hailed as the GOAT of T20 cricket.

Opening and captaining the Peshawar Zalmi team in the PSL 2024 season, Babar scored 72 runs in 51 balls against Karachi Kings, who are led by Shan Masood, the Pakistan Test captain. Even though his half-century went in vain, with Karachi winning by 7 wickets, Babar Azam secured headlines with his epic feat in the shortest format.

Babar Azam crossed the 10,000-run milestone in T20 cricket in his 271st innings. He breaks the record of Chris Gayle – the Universe Boss had reached 10,000 T20 runs in 285 innings. India and RCB star Virat Kohli achieved this landmark in his 299th T20 innings.

In terms of time taken from debut to reach this figure, Babar is the quickest as well. Babar took 11 years and 82 days to get to this feat from his debut in 2012. Chris Gayle needed 11 years and 215 days and Virat Kohli took 14 years and 176 days from their respective debuts to get in the 10000 T20 runs club.

Peshawar lose consecutive games despite half-centuries from Babar Azam

Babar has managed scores of 68 and 72 in his last two games, but those came at strike rates of 161 and 141. These are below-par strike rates in PSL where even 190 is not a safe total given the flat pitches and small boundary sizes. Consequently, Peshawar lost both the matches.
