More than 1100 players have put their hat in the ring for the IPL 2024 Auction. The BCCI has shared the list of the players who have registered for the auction with the 10 IPL franchises. Of these 1,166 players, about 300-400 players will go under the hammer on December 19 in Dubai in the IPL 2024 Auction.
This list includes 212 capped players, most of whom are expected to be up for grabs in the IPL 2024 Auction. However, the 10 franchises combined have only 77 slots to fill, out of which 30 are overseas. So it very much possible that some big names, who have accomplished plenty in international cricket and also have been part of previous IPL seasons, would go unsold
5 big international and past IPL stars who will likely go unsold in IPL 2024 auction:
Steve Smith
Australia star Steve Smith had pulled out of IPL 2023 and he had gone unsold in the IPL 2022 auction. The former Rajasthan Royals captain is well-known for his game in the two longer formats, but hasn’t really done much in T20 cricket. That is despite him being part of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2021 winning team.
Smith went unsold in the IPL 2022 auction when he set his base price of INR 2 crore. For the IPL 2024 auction as well, Smith has set his base price at INR 2 crore, and he’s likely to once again go unsold.
Angelo Mathews
Fans were surprised when they learned that Angelo Mathews has set his base price of INR 2 crore, which is the highest bracket in the IPL 2024 auction. Mathews, who recently made his Sri Lanka ODI return, last played in the IPL in 2017, and has since gone unsold. Nothing different is expected this time too.
Corey Anderson
Former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson last appeared in the IPL in 2018 and hasn’t been picked since then. A former MI and RCB player, Anderson doesn’t play international cricket anymore and barely makes any impactful performances in T20 franchises.
Kedar Jadhav
Former CSK batsman Kedar Jadhav is one of the only 4 Indians in the 2 crore base price category. But he is likely to go unsold, not only because of his high base price, but also because of no notable T20 performance in the past few months. He is also 38 years old.
Jamie Overton
England pacer Jamie Overton has been going unsold in the IPL auction for the past few years. Yet, Overton has kept his base price at INR 2 crore, which might be a bit too much for any franchise to shell for a player who will remain a backup only and has very little chance of featuring in the playing XI. Overton has poor record in T20s – a bowling average of 30 and an economy of more than 9 – so he is very likely to be unsold once again.
